TechXpress Releases Results of Wireless Security Study

San Luis Obispo, CA -- The research team at local information technology services firm, TechXpress, Inc., released today the results of a city-wide study regarding computer wireless network security.

“The results were pretty startling,” said TechXpress, Inc. President/CEO Bryan Sarlitt. “Wireless networking and wireless Internet use are growing rapidly in popularity. This study demonstrates that many new wireless computer users probably aren’t aware of the safety issues that may exist.”

The TechXpress research team used wireless detection equipment to conduct a 90-minute driving survey of major neighborhoods and business districts in San Luis Obispo. Included in the survey were Cal Poly, Downtown San Luis Obispo, and several major residential areas. The team found 1,159 detectable wireless networks in operation. Of those networks, 791, or 68%, were not secure.

According to Sarlitt, such a lack of security can have several consequences. Others can use your Internet connection for free, thus decreasing the speed of your connection. More dangerous, though, is the possibility of others gaining access to documents, e-mail and other files on your computer. Invaders may view confidential information, alter files, install viruses, or otherwise cause damage to your system or software.

“If your wireless network is wide open it is like allowing strangers to enter your home or business and use your computer,” said Sarlitt. “It is unfortunate that an issue so important with such an easy fix is so often overlooked.”

Sarlitt notes that as an immediate preventative measure, TechXpress will offer its services at a discount by coming to a home or business to check and if necessary secure a wireless connection for just $25 per computer. Techs will take all appropriate steps to configure the vulnerable wireless network for optimal security. As a long term initiative Sarlitt plans on partnering with county wide ISP’s (Internet Service Providers) to help educate their customers and take preventative measures so that their not at risk.
